Summary

  • Oversee and manage all areas of Breeding
  • Ensure that ALL animals across the breeding area have received proper feed, water, ventilation, and bedding on a daily basis, and 100% of all NR protocols and guidelines are followed
  • Assist with any other aspect of the farm as requested to ensure farm goals and targets are met and tasks are completed on a daily basis             

            

Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure weekly breeding and farrowing targets are achieved
  • Work with the Farm Manager to determine seasonal breeding and farrowing targets
  • Synchronize gilts and sows to make weekly breeding target
  • Order and Manage quantity and quality of semen on the farm; including the use of the iSperm equipment
  • Ensure consistent, quality heat checking and matings occur on all sows and gilts
  • Accurate and daily reporting of all breeding records, ultrasounds, and animal movements
  • Manage sow vaccinations (pre-farrowing, pre-breeding)
  • Treat sick animals on a timely as needed basis, recording, and managing withdraw periods for all of gestation
  • Ultrasound at 28-day and 56-day post service, accurately recording and reporting
  • Ensure all animal pens and handling facilities are in good working order, and routinely cleaned
  • Maintain a clean and orderly appearance of the breeding area and breeding facilities
  • Make seasonally appropriate adjustments to breeding barn, hoop barns, and breeding radial such bedding, wallows and sprinklers.
  • Maintenance and cleaning of waters, feeders and fences
  • Return misplaced sows and boars to proper pen
  • Conserve farm resources such as supplies, equipment and time

 

            

Minimum Education

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • B.S. degree in Animal Science or related field, OR minimum of one-year experience in straw-bedded pork production system, OR minimum of two years’ experience in traditional pork production.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to lead by example and manage a team of 1-3 people
  • Ability to problem solve, be a critical thinker, goal oriented, and a team player

Experience Requirements

  • Develop daily and weekly work schedules of tasks needed to be completed
  • Coach, Train, and Develop team members on a daily basis
  • Assist with goal setting and conduct annual reviews of all direct reports - MyPearl
  • Protect health and safety of staff and ensure humane treatment of animals
  • Promote cooperation within and across departments through staff and equipment sharing
  • Anticipate and prevent problems rather than allowing them to develop and reacting to them
  • Notify and discuss openly with management any problems, questions or concerns
  • Organize, prioritize and manage time to maximize quality and efficiency of work  

Experience Preferred

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements

  • Work with Farm Manager on animal movement and placement to ensure proper animal handling goals are met and sows/gilts are penned appropriately
  • Assist in managing incoming gilts, non-productive days, culling procedures and load outs, farrowing and breeding communications, cleaning/bedding of pens, inventory management
  • Assist in managing Period Close, supply orders, production records, cost control, and inventory as directed
  • Any other duties as assigned, requested, or directed by management/supervisor
