Summary

  • Assist in all aspects of farrowing to ensure weekly full-value pig targets are achieved
  • Ensure that ALL animals across the farrowing area have received proper feed, water, ventilation, and bedding on a daily basis, and 100% of all NR protocols and guidelines are followed
  • Assist with any other aspect of the farm as requested to ensure farm goals and targets are met and tasks are completed on a daily basis

Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide an ideal environment for farrowing sows and newborn pigs by ensuring proper seasonal adjustments are made such as ventilation, bedding, and wallows
  • Ensure proper procedures are followed for Day-One pig care and fostering in order to maximize the number of full value pigs and minimize the number of problem litters
  • Efficiently process piglets in accordance with company procedures
  • Efficiently vaccinate piglets and prepare weanings in accordance with company procedures
  • Proper treatment/care of sows in farrowing including daily observations and walking of pens to ensure health and productivity of sows and piglets
  • Maintain cleaning/bedding of all farrowing huts
  • Maintain and clean waters, feeders, and fences
  • Keep, communicate, and report accurate records on a daily basis
  • Notify and discuss openly with management any problems, concerns, or questions
  • Recognize and manage unique situations that require special attention or treatment
  • Maintain a clean/ orderly appearance around the office/ farm.
  • Conserve farm resources such as supplies, equipment, and time
  • Anticipate and prevent problems whenever possible rather than allowing problems to develop and progress and then reacting to them
  • Communicate openly and freely with others
  • Any other duties as assigned, requested, or directed by management/supervisor

Minimum Education

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with and caring for livestock
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to lead by example, and work with a team of 2-5 people
  • Ability to problem solve, be a critical thinker, goal oriented, and a team player

 

Experience Requirements

  • Develop daily and weekly work schedules of tasks needed to be completed
  • Protect health and safety of staff and ensure humane treatment of animals
  • Promote cooperation within and across departments through staff and equipment sharing
  • Anticipate and prevent problems rather than allowing them to develop and reacting to them
  • Notify and discuss openly with management any problems, questions or concerns
  • Organize, prioritize and manage time to maximize quality and efficiency of work
