  • Oversee and manage all areas of Gestation and Gilt Development
  • Ensure that ALL animals across the farm have received proper feed, water, ventilation, and bedding on a daily basis, and 100% of all NR protocol and guidelines are followed
  • Assist with all other aspects of the farm to ensure farm goals and targets are met and tasks are completed on a daily basis

Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in ensuring weekly breeding and farrowing targets are achieved
  • Ensure sufficient gilt pool to make weekly breeding target
  • Ensure sufficient weaned sow/ opportunity sow pool to make weekly breeding target
  • Accurate and daily reporting of all records, ultrasounds, and animal movement
  • Managing sow vaccinations (pre-farrowing, pre-breeding)
  • Treating sick animals on a timely as needed basis, recording, and managing withdraw periods for all of gestation
  • Ultrasound at 28-day and 56-day post service, accurately recording and reporting
  • Ensure all animal pens and handling facilities are in good working order, and routinely cleaned
  • Ensure proper animal handling goals are met and sows/gilts are penned appropriately
  • Assist in managing incoming gilts, non-productive days, culling procedures and load outs, farrowing and breeding communications, cleaning/bedding of pens, and inventory management
  • Assist in managing Period Close, supply orders, production records, cost control, and inventory as directed
  • Any other duties as assigned, requested, or directed by management/supervisor

Minimum Education

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • B.S. degree in Animal Science or related field, OR minimum of one-year experience in straw-bedded pork production system, OR minimum of two years’ experience in traditional pork production.

Experience Requirements

  • Develop daily and weekly work schedules of tasks needed to be completed
  • Coach, Train, and Develop team members on a daily basis
  • Assist with goal setting and conduct annual reviews of all direct reports - MyPearl
  • Protect health and safety of staff and ensure humane treatment of animals
  • Promote cooperation within and across departments through staff and equipment sharing
  • Anticipate and prevent problems rather than allowing them to develop and reacting to them
  • Notify and discuss openly with management any problems, questions or concerns
  • Organize, prioritize and manage time to maximize quality and efficiency of work  

Experience Preferred

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to lead by example and manage a team of 2-5 people
  • Ability to problem solve, be a critical thinker, goal oriented, and a team player
