Provides leadership and manages the work environment by means of Quality Improvement Process and employs the team management concept within the Maintenance department to meet production requirements and company goals. The Refrigeration Superintendent is responsible for managing the Refrigeration, WasteWater, Electronics, Facilities and Environmental functions within the facility. This person is also responsible for the operation and upkeep of the facility's vital utility systems to include: refrigeration systems, compressed air systems, boiler systems and stream systems. This position will also direct, supervise, and lead mechanics. Extensive ammonia refrigeration experience is required.

Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Manages and supervises general associates including hiring, training and developing associates to ensure [production requirements and goals are met at least cost. Provides timely, accurate and consistent reports, i.e., safety, production, cost administrative, etc. to ensure production requirements and goals are met at least cost. Provides a safety work environment for all associates eliminating unsafe acts or conditions. Ensures the Quality Improvement Process and team management concept are employed within areas of responsibility. Controls costs and assets managed within established goals. Manages the installation of new equipment; maintains a chain efficiency of 98% while maintaining quality and ensuring associated and plant safety.


Technical Experience with refrigeration systems and PSM required. Ability to demonstrate and share knowledge of refrigeration systems, Hazmat, mechanical systems, electrical, safety and preventative maintenance programs. Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing effective manufacturing. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, and resource allocation. Must be familiar with computers and be proficient in Microsoft Office suite.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering or related studies/experience preferred. 

Experience Requirements

3 - 5 years experience in an industrial environment; strong reading, math, written and analytical skills plus technical courses in electrical, hydraulics and ammonia refrigeration. Requires travel to remote facilities and plants for meetings.


1. Fundamentals (100%)

  • Manages operations to ensure the safe and timely completion of departmental work by effectively utilizing people, equipment, and materials.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure systems such that the staff and workforce implement safe and effective operations.
  • Knowledge of industry regulations so that staff and the workforce operate safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of Environmental regulations, and Perdue Farms, Inc EAS requirements related to maintenance and utilities functions.
  • Understands and Implements robust 5S Program.
  • Can provide training for technical skills, TPM, safety (i.e. LOTO, 6S) and other applicable topics.
  • Effectively communicates change to maintenance teams to reduce barriers to change.
  • Manages the implementation of change i.e. new processes, equipment and ways of working.
  • Works with Training & Development Manufacturing Support Lead to identify and develop a skills matrix.
  • Must possess an in-depth understanding of individual items of integrated systems, how they operate, impact on product quality, fault diagnosis & corrective action.
  • Ensures overall quality levels (equipment and department work) and on-time delivery schedules are maintained.
  • Manages associate activities. This includes evaluation and discipline, overall performance management, training and development, proactively analyzing and resolving work issues, initiating or suggesting plans to motivate workers to achieve goals, and effective communication with all associates.
  • Establishes or adjusts work procedures and schedules to meet facility schedules and goals.
  • Continuously works on process improvement and department efficiency. This includes recommendations to improve methods, equipment performance, overall work quality, working conditions, and use of equipment
  • Ensures maintenance work will comply with all local, state and federal safety and environmental requirements and regulations.
  • Other duties as needed.


2. Health and Safety (at all times)

  • Proactively identify and resolve safety concerns under respective maintenance area of responsibility.
  • Observe and conform to all corporate EH&S guidelines and procedures.
  • Adhere to established Lockout/Tag out Programs.
  • Actively participate in local plant’s safety program
  • Follow all PPE guidelines as per site’s regulations.
  • Maintain clean, organize work environment within the maintenance store room
  • Conform to all ergonomic assessment requirements.


3. Quality (at all times)

  • Comply to GMP and corporate quality SOP’s
  • Understanding of maintenance impact on plant’s Micro goals and support Micro prevention practices.

  • CMRP, Six Sigma, Lean Certifications Preferred

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements

When in a plant environment: Exposure primarily consists of wet and moist floors which include metal and plastic grating surfaces. May be exposed to temperatures of 28 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit with both ambient and 100% humidity. May handle product 25 degrees to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. May be exposed to noise ranges of 50 db to 110 db. May be exposed to dust, feathers and all chemicals used in poultry, food, processing facility. Must wear and use protective and safety equipment required for the job as directed by the Company. Occasional exposure to carbon dioxide vapors 10ppm and chlorine less than 20 ppm. Able to stand for several hours. Work may include lifting (up to 50 lbs), reaching, bending, pushing boxes on conveyor assembly.
